Saving energy with less AC all summer

The other day I was shocked when my roommate texted me with a new idea for saving cash at the house. She said she had been thinking for a while about trying to reduce our energy expenditure so we could go on a cool trip together. Truthfully, we were paying a lot of money for our basic utility bills every month. Both of us have been trying to save up, but it seemed like there were a million reasons why we didn’t put any savings in the bank. The massive energy bill was definitely a major contributor. We had talked a few times about trying to reduce our energy expenditure, but she had decided that the time was upon us. She proposed that we were not going to use our air conditioning system every summer day. She said we would save a ton of cash simply by cutting out our cooling system usage in half. When I asked how we were going to accomplish this, she said that clearly we could either remember to turn off the air conditioning unit every time we left the house so that the cooling system wasn’t running all day long. Our other choice was to use the cooling system for only half the days of every week. I thought this sounded absolutely impossible, but she was convinced that it was easier to turn off the AC every other day than to remember to power down the air conditioning system. I don’t know about the durability of this energy saving scheme, but I can tell you that she remembers to turn the air conditioning system off every other day. I honestly hoped she’d forget.
