My grandfather chose to teach me how to maintain HVAC equipment

I remember a long time ago when my grandfather asked me if I wanted to learn about maintaining HVAC equipment.

I shrugged and told him I guessed it seemed cool.

He told me, “Speaking of cool, you’ll always feel comfortable when you keep up with the AC system maintenance.” When we went to the basement to check out the HVAC equipment, he showed me how to shut off the power to the equipment. He told me this was the most important step because if you forgot to shut off the power, you could be electrocuted and die. I certainly didn’t feel ready to die when I was still so young, so I told him I would remember that. Then he showed me how to open the cabinet to the HVAC. It was a lot easier than I imagined, the door just kind of slid up and off and we didn’t even have to unfasten any screws or anything. He showed me how dirty it was inside of the HVAC unit and he said it was pressing to clean all that garbage out of there carefully. We pulled out the shop vac and vacuumed all the dirt and debris that was built up inside. It sort of reminded me of working inside of a computer tower, maintaining and keeping it clean. It made sense to me why this type of maintenance was so important, because you’ll come across issues if you don’t keep up with clearing the dirt and debris. He showed me how to change the air filters, and it’s something I practiced doing for a long time. Thanks to my grandfather, I was working on my own HVAC equipment long after he passed away.
