Benjamin Franklin was known for several things, not the least of which was his several wise sayings. “Nothing in this life is certain except death and taxes,” is an example. “Guests, like fish, begin to smell in three days,” is another saying; and I can absolutely attest to both of these! My wife and I have wonderful, dear friends who stay with us every year, visiting from another state. My wife and I have found that we truly enjoy their company for about the first three mornings. But anything longer and my wife and I begin to pray they would just go back home. If they come to visit during the Wintertime weeks, my wife and I find that they love to keep their guest room plus bathroom windows open at all times of day and night. Then if it’s during the warmer weeks, they do the same. Either way, it causes our heating plus cooling bills to increase during their stay. My wife and I have politely recommended that they keep the windows shut tight, explaining that the oil furnace never stops running in the Wintertime plus the A/C never shuts off in the Summer. They always smile politely as if they intend to do as we suggest. But the next morning it’s more of the same. Not only does it interfere with the heating or the cooling of the home; additionally it puts undue stress on the entire Heating plus A/C system. At some point, the extra stress could cause a malfunction of the oil furnace or the A/C. Unfortunately, my wife and I suppose that we cannot keep discussing the subject with our out of town friends. My wife and I have chosen the unnecessary stress on our Heating plus A/C plan over stress on our good friendship.
