I am going to make some special rules

Benjamin Franklin was known for numerous things, some of which were his numerous wise sayings.

“Nothing in this life is certain except death plus taxes,” is a single example.

“Guests, like fish, begin to smell in three days,” is another example. I can actually attest to both of these! The two of us have close friends who stay with us once a year, travelling from another state. The two of us have found that we love their company for about the first few afternoons, but anything longer and we begin to pray they would just leave. If they come while in the Winter season weeks, we find that they prefer to keep their bedroom plus lavatory windows open at all times. Then if it’s while in the warmer weeks, they do the same! Both ways makes our heating plus cooling bills skyrocket while they are visiting. The two of us have asked in a friendly way that they keep the windows closed, telling them that the heater never stops running in the Winter season plus the cooling system never stops running in the summer season. They smile kindly as though they intend to comply, but the next day it’s more of the same. Our HVAC company, while visiting for an annual repair appointment, agreed that windows should always be shut once the HVAC idea is on. Not only does it cause problems with the heating and the cooling of the house, but it also puts unnecessary stress on the whole HVAC system. Eventually the added stress could lead to a breaking of the furnace or the cooling system, but sadly, we suppose that we can’t keep bringing the issue up with our out of city guests. The two of us have picked stress on our HVAC over stress on our friendship.
