My dad thinks he knows everyone.

  • Whenever someone mentions a name, he tries to figure out where he heard it before.

Most times he comes with a reason for recognizing the name, but it has nothing to do with who we are talking about. Last week, I was telling him about the HVAC technician that had been to our dormitory at school. I told him how cute he was, and that I had gotten his business card. When he heard the name, he was sure he knew the man. I told him he wasn’t much older than I was, and it couldn’t possibly be anyone he knew. For the rest of the weekend, while I was home, he kept mulling over where he had heard the name before. He opened up over dinner, and told me his father was the owner of the HVAC company in the city where I was going to school. I didn’t know anything about who owned the HVAC company. The school maintenance team called the HVAC company and asked for an HVAC technician to work on the dorm’s furnace. I was in the break room studying when he arrived. I had a date with the HVAC technician when I got home from the long weekend, and I really hoped dad didn’t know his father. That would be an embarrassing way to meet a boy’s parents. I told dad I was sure he was wrong, but he had already gotten on the phone. He had gone to college with the HVAC technician’s dad, and they were about to renew their friendship. Nothing could be more embarrassing than that.
