I went out on my own as an HVAC tech after my employer went out of business

While it wasn’t my initial intention to work in the HVAC industry, it wasn’t the strangest pivot in the world after being an electrician for so many years.

My dad is a retired electrician and taught me so much of the trade before I was even old enough to seriously think about what I wanted to do with my life and act on it.

But once I was at the age of applying to college, I knew that I wanted to attend trade school like my father, uncles, and grandfather before me. They gave me a lot of options like being an auto mechanic, IT technician, or chef, but I chose becoming an electrician just like my father did. But after a few years of working in commercial construction, I watched too many fatal accidents and was eager to get out of working with high voltages. It’s a scary and sobering thought when you realize how powerful and dangerous that equipment can be, even if you’re operating it within code. I decided to move into the HVAC industry after a company adjacent to my previous one was putting out notices for new workers to apply for jobs as HVAC technicians. You get better job security and the job is a lot safer than working with high voltages like I was before. After I worked for a highly rated HVAC company for a number of years, I went out on my own as their business folded. They lost a lot of their clients while one of the original directors fell ill and could no longer helm the ship. I moved to a bigger city and started my own HVAC company.
