When I was a kid portable was not easy to move, then our condo cooling system required our father, sibling & uncle to move it, then the only room in the current home that had the wall space for the A/C system was mine… I hated housing that big A/C unit… First, all our bookshelves had to be removed to make way for that tall, ugly system, however all our books had to be put in a storage tote & rest for the entire sizzling season, and next, the cooling system leaks water steadily. I had to keep a tote to collect the water or I would wake up to a real wet carpet. The worst was our family with the cooling system though. My father wanted the current home to be -20 degrees in the summer. The A/C system was cranked to the lowest setting at the highest fan speed. My kitchen got so chilly at night that I wore a sweatshirt & pants. I also was not permitted to shut our door. The cooling equipment was blowing chilly air for the whole house, and so our door had to remain open no matter what. Anytime I dared shut it I got yelled at by our father, but changing into a swimsuit or worse out of it, in a chilly chilly room with the door open was rough. That portable A/C equipment was 1 of the worst things about our childhood. It was a attractive day when our family substituted the condo to central & got rid of the big machine.
