I wasn’t the smartest guy in school.
I was stuck in special education for most of my life, because I was a slow learner.
Once I learned something, I retained it forever, but my comprehension wasn’t the best. After graduation, i signed up for HVAC classes. Another guy from my class, had also signed up for HVAC classes. He told me I was too dumb to be an HVAC technician, and he convinced a couple of the other guys that I wasn’t smart enough to be an HVAC technician. I couldn’t believe how nasty they were to me. I was sitting outside the classroom one afternoon. I didn’t want to go in before the instructor showed up, because of how badly I was being treated. When the HVAC instructor showed up, he asked why I wasn’t inside the classroom. I told him I wasn’t ready to go in yet. He asked if the guys were teasing me. I looked at him, because I didn’t think anyone noticed what was going on. I explained that I was a slow learner, but I retained what I learned. He offered to help me out after classes and help me with the HVAC lessons. It was to be our secret. By the end of the class, I was in the top 10% of our HVAC classes. I passed the HVAC certification at the top of the class, thanks to my instructor. I even got the coveted apprenticeship in my instructor’s HVAC company, because I reminded my instructor of him when he started out in HVAC.
