I could hear the furnace running all the time.

Within minutes, the furnace had shut down

I was lying in bed last week, and I thought I could hear the furnace running. It was normal for the furnace to cycle on and off, but it wasn’t normal for it to turn on and not shut off. I laid there for several hours; listening to the furnace running. I was counting the dollars going out the window as the furnace continued to run. I knew the cost of fuel, and I was sure I could hear the oil tank draining along with the furnace running. It wasn’t just the fuel that was being wasted, but my electric bill was going up. I got out of bed the next morning, and called the HVAC company. I told them I had listened to my furnace run nonstop for the last four hours, but it still wasn’t up to temp in the house. They had an HVAC technician at the house within two hours. When the HVAC technician arrived, he checked the thermostat before looking at the furnace. He told me that if the thermostat isn’t working properly, the furnace won’t work properly. They need to communicate to each other to keep the temperature regulated. He said there was definitely a problem with the thermostat and headed to his service to get a new one. It took him a couple of minutes to connect the thermostat. Within minutes, the furnace had shut down. The HVAC technician stuck around long enough to make sure the furnace turned back on when the temperature dropped, and that it turned back on when the temperature got up to max. I would have never thought a thermostat could cause so many problems with the furnace.
