Changing of the HVAC guard

All things run their course.

HVAC systems do that too.

Yet, I feel sort of weird about the fact that we are replacing the HVAC this week. It’s like a changing of the guard for this heating and cooling system to be gone. And I feel like I am the only one who feels this way. When I mentioned how amazing that HVAC unit has been all these years at dinner, my family looked at me like I was nuts. Well, I do love that heat pump and I’m not ashamed to admit it. It’s been about 18 months since the HVAC technician told me that the heat pump was on the end cycle of its productivity. The HVAC tech told me that I would soon see the utility costs spike as the heating and cooling unit would run a whole lot to keep up with demand. This news was tough to hear but not all that surprising. That HVAC unit had been there since we bought the place. I was the one who researched that model and had the local service provider put it in. That’s been 22 years ago. Perhaps this is why I feel so funny about seeing the heat pump go. It represents a most important chunk of our lives. This HVAC unit was responsible for keeping us comfortable while raising our family. And now that we are replacing the heat pump, I know it’s just the first step toward moving on from this house. There will be a few other upgrades that we make to the place prior to putting the house on the market. But the process starts with this HVAC unit.
