I had a great time going to college ,it was the most fun six months of my life! I laugh about it now, because I finally have set up some semblance of a life for myself so I can laugh about my mistakes.
For a few years though it was no laughing matter! My parents had me nearly convinced that without a 4 year college degree my life would go nowhere and be nothing.
They are sort of zealots when it comes to higher education, and never even considered the idea of me going to trade school. These days I have my HVAC certification, and have found that it made my life a whole lot easier. One of the problems with college was that I didn’t know what I would do after I graduated, because these days a degree is no guarantee for a job. This is not true at all with an HVAC certification, where I had two standing job offers while I was still taking the classes! Skilled tradespeople like HVAC techs are in high demand, not just here but all around the world! I got a few emails from a recruiter looking to bring some HVAC techs over to Europe to teach some classes to the locals. My folks made me think that a trade would limit my options, but I never had so many options before I started working as an HVAC tech. One day my folks will recognize that studying HVAC work was what was right for me, and their dreams of having a college professor for a son will have to wait.
