When Your Furnace is Blowing Cold Air

Feeling cold air blowing out of your furnace can be a little irritating.

There are a few things that you can do before calling in a professional.

If your furnace is blowing cold air, that means that the unit is overheating. A furnace usually overheats because the air is not circulating properly. Some of the reasons the air is not circulating correctly are, a blocked vent, a clogged air filter, or an oversized furnace. A blocked air vent is an easy fix. Every vent in your home should have a foot of space around it to ensure that air can properly circulate once it comes out. Do not block vents with furniture or items. A clogged air filter can cause many problems because if the filter is filled with allergens, dust, dirt, pet dander, and other debris, no air can flow through the filter. You should change your filter every three months. When it comes to having a furnace, bigger is not always better. An oversized furnace can blast too much warm air into a small space and when all that heat has nowhere to go, it gets backed up. Furnaces are supposed to heat the air, not contain hot air. You need to find out how many BTU’S(British Thermal Units) your home needs and how many your system provides. If your system provides a number that is a lot greater than the BTU’S that your home needs, then your furnace may be oversized. Checking these three things is necessary when trying to solve the problem of your furnace blowing cold air. Regularly checking your air filter, and getting your furnace checked by a professional at least once a year can make the world of a difference in heating your home correctly, especially during the cold winter months.
