Heating and cooling in the break room

When you combined that with the ambient heating put off by all the electronics, it was toasty warm all day every day in the break room.

On the deep sea fishing vessel I worked on, the break room was sacred ground. It was for hanging out, watching movies, playing video games, eating, drinking, and smoking. It was not for talking about work, politics, religion, or basically anything. We had all shift to talk with each other as we worked, when we had precious downtime it was best to be quiet. The thing is that we all needed one place that was a stress free zone, which was extra important because of how overwhelmingly stressful this job is. We would routinely work 16 to 20 hours straight, so having a good heater in the break room was the only relief we would get from the bitter cold. Even the bunks down below had terrible heating, thanks to the extreme cold of the water outside the hull. The break room was kind of small, but had its own dedicated heater which made the place almost too warm sometimes. When you combined that with the ambient heating put off by all the electronics, it was toasty warm all day every day in the break room. One day we had a scare when the ventilation system for the room stopped working. We might not have used the ductwork from the ship for our heating, but we still needed the vents to circulate air out of the room. Running a heater in a closed room with no outside ventilation is always dangerous, in my experience. We had to keep the door cracked that day, which brought in too much cold for the heater to battle.
