How can it be so cold when the furnace is running?

I was sitting in the house last week with a sweater on and a blanket wrapped around me when my husband got home from work.

He thought I was sick, but I told him I couldn’t get warm.

The furnace had been running all day, but it was still cold inside. He looked at me and asked how can it be so cold when the furnace is running? I showed him the thermostat and it was only fifty-five in the house. I told him I had called the HVAC company, but they couldn’t get to the house before the end of the week. He didn’t want to wait that long to have the furnace repaired. His first thought was to check the thermostat. We had a new thermostat in the furnace room, so he pulled it out. It was a digital thermostat and he was sure that could be the problem. He installed the new thermostat, but nothing happened. He put the old thermostat back on and asked if I had changed the thermostat settings? I never touched the thermostat. I knew how finicky my husband was when the thermostat settings were disturbed. He called the HVAC company and told them we needed help sooner than in two days. Our furnace was running constantly and it was only fifty-five degrees in the house. When I heard him raise his voice and tell them he wasn’t stupid, I knew they asked if it could be the thermostat. Now, we had to wait for two days, even thought he got upset with the HVAC company, for them to come to the house and check the furnace.
