Deciding whether to turn off my heater when I go on vacation

I have always struggled to choose whether I should switch off the air conditioning unit in my house or leave it running when I go on an extended vacation.

On the few times that I have gone, I always leave someone behind to be sure that the heating and cooling unit will be in use.

However, this one time, I thought about locking my house and leaving it unoccupied. I struggled with this before finally deciding to call my HVAC technician for sound advice. I was indecisive on whether to have someone stay around or not since winter, and I was afraid of coming back to frozen or burst pipes and taps. I knew that I would not be able to enjoy my vacation if I was constantly worrying about my HVAC system’s state. After all, this is one of the most significant investments in my house, and the last thing I needed was to think about replacing it simply because it broke down while I was away. Fortunately, my HVAC contactor helped me separate myth from truth. Based on his advice, I installed a smart thermostat that would give me the freedom to regulate the temperatures remotely. I no longer needed to have someone in my space in my absence. With these, I could monitor the situation and decide if I would adjust the temperatures or not. Ideally, the HVAC professional advised me to set it at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. This was an excellent middle ground that would ensure my pipes remained unfrozen but at the same time save me from the heartache of exorbitant energy bills at the end of the month.
