Reliable HVAC and preparation are key to winter

Plus, the wood stove allows me to rein in the costs of HVAC heating a bit as well

When winter is nearly six months long and full of freezing and subfreezing temperatures along with plenty of snow and ice, be prepared. That is definitely the mantra in these parts. And I definitely paid attention as I was growing up on just the best ways to be ready and then manage that sort of winter. Of course, it all starts with the HVAC. We have a very efficient and very reliable gas furnace. This gas furnace was just about top of the line and rated in the top 3 for reliability when we bought it. We spent a bit more on this gas furnace but with very good reason. Cheaping out on the HVAC equipment in this part of the world will end up in problems. And nobody wants to try and survive days without proper heating. Of course, I have the HVAC company come to do all the HVAC maintenance in the early fall. I even have them come back in late spring to put the gas furnace to bed properly. We also have a wood stove. This is both a back up and a supplemental heating source. It’s really, really nice to know that you have a back up in case of emergency where the gas furnace could be off for days. Plus, the wood stove allows me to rein in the costs of HVAC heating a bit as well. This time of year, as fall is upon us, I’m kicking it into high gear in order to get all my house preparations done as well. A very tight and insulated house is the best way to stay warm and help hold down heating costs too.
