Protecting my HVAC cabinet

There are a lot of things I imagine would be appealing to thieves. This is why I always lock my car. I don’t leave anything outside over night and I make sure the garage door is down and locked. Getting stuff stolen is not pleasant and I have hated it every time it has happened to me in my life. However, I never thought that I would have to take measures to be sure the copper in my HVAC cabinet wasn’t stolen. This is a new one on me. But there are thieves and desperate people out there who are destroying the contents of an HVAC cabinet in order to get to a few handfuls of copper fittings. This is not a joke. You’d think that if they were going to the trouble of breaking into the HVAC cabinet, they would remove valuable HVAC components. There has to be some sort of market for things like HVAC compressors. I know they don’t come cheap because I have had to replace one before. But no, all the important stuff is completely superfluous to these folks. It’s simply a smash and grab situation. The HVAC components are ripped out and left strewn across the yard. It’s just the copper they want. Apparently, it’s very easy to get cash money for any sort of copper. However, these people are also being paid pennies on the dollar because the copper buyers know it’s stolen. I have actually seen the results of this sort of thievery. It was impressive enough for me to take some preventive action. I now actually have a steel cage that locks down over my HVAC cabinet to keep it from being broken into.
