When I was a kid, I used to go over to a friend’s house fairly often during the spring and the summer. However, I learned early on that I didn’t want to go there to stay the night during the late fall or especially during the winter! Whenever the temperatures started cooling off outside, that meant that it was just time for me to start staying at home where I could stay nice and warm. That’s because my friend’s parents didn’t really ever use their heating system during the winter. Well, I probably shouldn’t say that they didn’t really ever use it; they did use it, but barely. They would keep the thermostat set at sixty degrees. So if the temperature inside the house fell below sixty degrees, then the heating would kick on. But when you’re hanging out at your friend’s house and you’re trying to listen to music or watch TV, 62 degrees is pretty darn cold! I don’t know how they lived through all of the cold winters without using their furnace, though. At my house, my parents always kept the thermostat at 74 degrees during the winter and that’s how I like it. I guess different people have different ideas about what’s acceptable with their heating and cooling systems, but I liked our house much better during the winter! Sometimes my friend would come over to my house to hang out, but really I think that she just wanted to warm up.
