Commercial office space is a waste of money

When I sold my online SEO business, I suggested that the new company owner keep the structure of the company the same.

There is no reason to set up an office space where people need to report to work.

For web builds and SEO, everything is done via the computer and online. A reliable team can easily and effectively complete all parts of the job from home. Being an online business avoids paying rent, electric bills, Heating bills, air conditioning, repairs, maintenance, insurance and for a cleaning crew. Basically, the new company owner simply needed to leave everything as is and just enjoy the checks coming in. Instead, this guy had to make changes. I am convinced that there are two types of company owners. The smart businessmen strive to maximize profits at every opportunity. The other kind is more concerned with looking successful. It is all about appearances. The first thing the new owner did was choose a commercial office building to rent. He invested in a giant commercial office located right downtown. He then informed his workers that they were now required to report to the office for a 9-5 day. Under my ownership, they had a set task list. If it took them two hours to complete it, they were done for the day. They could work in sweatpants from anywhere with access to the internet. They could take days off or work in the middle of the night. It didn’t matter to me. With a set schedule, most of the team quit. The commercial office space is a rental. The guy doesn’t own the building. He is spending money on updates to a rental building! He has put down new floors, painted a business logo on the wall and bought all sorts of furnishings. He’s just wasting money needlessly and driving the business toward bankruptcy.
