End of HVAC R 22 refrigerant poses questions

My great HVAC folks let me know years ago that my HVAC unit used R 22 refrigerant and that it was going away in 2020.

  • At the time they told me, I didn’t think the HVAC would even make it to 2020.

My HVAC is now 23 years old. While it doesn’t perform the way it used to, it still is working and does a decent job except when temperatures get extreme. Then, it just can’t stop running in order to meet the demand. But, I have to face some tough questions about just what to do with the HVAC. There are still places one can find R 22 but it is super expensive. I had the HVAC recharged just before the end of the year in order to give me some more time to answer the looming question. Should I just get rid of the HVAC unit now that it is effectively obsolete? That seems like an easy yes. However, it’s really hard for me to get rid of something that still works. My wife and I discussed it and decided to engage an HVAC contractor to help us with this decision. That was a great idea because the HVAC contractor was able to put the entire scenario in perspective. We found that the cost of replacing the HVAC system would be offset a great deal by the energy savings. But, I still wanted to keep the HVAC until it hit the end. So, we got the replacement ordered and it’s ready for installation as soon as the old one either needs a recharge or gives out.
