Proactive HVAC methods save big money

Writing very large checks to utility companies is not something that I love to do.

In fact, it takes all my strength just to rip that enormous check out of the checkbook. Fortunately, my family and I are in good financial shape. However, I am having to make money go further while still bringing in the same salary. A familiar story to many, I am sure. This circumstance simply doesn’t allow me to just pay bills without some attempt to reign in costs. The HVAC in the summer is something that can easily cripple our household budget left unchecked. This year, I have gotten much more proactive about saving money by lessening the amount of kilowatt hours used. It all begins and ends at the HVAC thermostat. You can do a myriad of other things to lower HVAC costs. But, if you aren’t committed to addressing the thermostat setting, then your savings will be much less significant. My first move was to get a smart thermostat. There will be no more manual operation of the thermostat. I laid this out for the family. The manual code will stay with me so, if you’re hot in the house, get under a fan. I also bought some well designed solar curtains for all the windows in the house. My wife and I agreed that we could do without so much direct sunlight because it is such a big source of ambient air heating. Finally, I made a further commitment. I promised to grill our proteins outside at least 4 times per week. This will keep us from using the range or the oven inside. I’m excited to see what sort of savings these efforts will return.
