Should replace the heater before it dies

My furnace device has been slowly dying for years now.

  • Every year the heater starts up, I am surprised.

I just don’t expect it to give me one more year. The furnace makes very loud noises when operating. It also takes forever to power up and turn off when I alter the thermostat settings. I know there is dirt, debris and rust deep in the system that I can’t reach. I just don’t feel it is worth getting a heating business to fix it. The device is already over 10 years old. Properly cared for furnaces only live around 15 years old. I have already saved quite a bit of money for a new heating device. Now I am not sure what to do. I hate to replace a heater that works. But, I don’t want the heating system to suddenly die on me. If the furnace died at the start of autumn, no big deal. I would call up my HVAC company, get a new heating device and be good to go. What if the furnace dies in the middle of winter or on a holiday? Not only is after hours service more expensive, but sometimes it is not possible. The cold season is the busiest season for my HVAC company. I could possibly call for a new heater and not be able to get it until the end of winter. Going months without heating is not possible. My pipes would freeze and I would certainly be uncomfortable. Maybe I should just get the new heater even though my current one is still going.
