Mildew and Allergens in the Air Vents Cause Breathing Problems

When he opened it up, he had on a mask and he would not let his Mom in the room.

My brother was working downstairs the other night and I could hear him coughing and hacking. I yelled down to see if he was okay. He came back up and explained that every time he had gone downstairs lately, he was getting these symptoms. He had a sizable build of mucus in his lungs and he was out of breath. After about a week of this, I wanted him to go to the doctor’s but when he came back upstairs, the coughing and hacking would stop. I called the doctor and the doctor suspected allergens. His workshop was in the basement and he had been really working down there the whole time we owned the house. The two of us had recently had the ductwork cleaned, so I didn’t think the ducts could be the culprit. I called the Heating, Ventilation, and A/C company and I talked to my son, who is employed there. I told him what was going on with his uncle and he promised to come home after work. When the ductwork was cleaned they had forgotten to clean the air vents. He said that it was possible that with the humidity that is so common here, all of us could have mold in that air vents downstairs. When he opened it up, he had on a mask and he would not let his Mom in the room. My son discovered what he was looking for. He did not have the shop equipment so he could not wash or sanitize the system. He also recommend all of us have his company wash the entire ductwork again and that they be sure to sanitize the air vents. He didn’t believe they had done the job well enough.
