Portable AC as a kid was horrible

When I was a kid portable air conditioning was not easy to move.

Our home air conditioner required my father, brother and uncle to move it.

The only room in the house that had the wall space for the AC system was mine. I hated housing that giant AC unit. First, all my bookshelves had to be removed to make way for that tall, ugly system. All my books had to be put in a storage tote and sit for the entire hot season. Next, the air conditioner leaks water steadily. I had to keep a bucket to collect the water or I would wake up to a real wet carpet. The worst was my family with the cooling system though. My father wanted the house to be -20 degrees in the summer. The AC system was cranked to the lowest setting at the highest fan speed. My bedroom got so cold at night that I wore a sweatshirt and pants. I also was not permitted to shut my door. The cooling unit was blowing cold air for the whole house. So my door had to remain open no matter what. Anytime I dared shut it I got yelled at by my father. Changing into a swimsuit or worse out of it, in a freezing cold room with the door open was rough. That portable AC device was one of the worst things about my childhood. It was a wonderful day when my family updated the home to central air conditioning and got rid of the big machine.
